Humpback Whale Specialty Coffee is a small, family-run café in Munich's Maxvorstadt, tucked into the Amalienpassage just off Türkenstraße and a short walk from the university. Look for the round porthole window in the passage. The coffee programme starts with a palate. Co-founder Quách Hương won the German Cup Tasters Championship in 2025, and she tastes and selects every coffee on the menu. Everything is single origin, and the range goes well beyond the usual suspects: a Costa Rica Geisha, an Ethiopian, a Sumatra and Dung K'No from Vietnam's Central Highlands. Espresso drinks arrive on oak boards with a glass of water, and there is filter for anyone who wants to taste the bean on its own. Inside, blue-and-white tiles, handmade ceramic cups and a counter of pastries set a calm, homely tone, and the shelves behind the bar are stacked with bags to take home.
