Almanegra Café — coffee roaster in Mexico City

Coffee Roaster

Almanegra Café

4.4

Mexican-only beans, in-house roasted in small batches. Narvarte flagship plus Roma, Moderna and Escandón sites.

Almanegra opened in Narvarte as one of the first cafés in the neighbourhood where coffee was the whole point — not a side-order to brunch. After two years the project expanded to La Roma, then to Moderna and Escandón, and today anchors four locations across CDMX. The Narvarte flagship on Av. Universidad is still the origin story.

The editorial line is strict: every bean on the menu is grown in Mexico. Almanegra works directly with smallholders in Oaxaca, Chiapas, Veracruz and Guerrero, roasting each lot in small batches to expose the origin rather than mask it. The programme leans toward light and medium roasts — bright, fruit-forward, sometimes surprising for visitors who arrive expecting darker traditional Mexican profiles.

The Narvarte bar is compact, well-dialled, and busy from open to close. Espresso first, careful pour-over on request, retail bags on a small front shelf. Staff are happy to talk through what's on the bar that morning, and the rotating menu makes return visits worth it.

If you only have time for one Almanegra, make it Narvarte — that's where the whole project started.
