Coffee Roaster
Artisan Roast
★ 4.7
Scotland's pioneer specialty roaster. Own cupping lab, Cup of Excellence lots, whisky-cask-finished experiments.
Artisan Roast is the cafe that started it all. When it opened on Broughton Street in 2007, it was the first specialty coffee roaster in Scotland — and more than fifteen years on, every conversation about Edinburgh coffee still begins here. The flagship is famous as much for its character as its craft: the hand-scrawled sign in the window reading 'J.K. Rowling never wrote here,' a wry response to years of mistaken tourists, has become a small landmark of its own.
Behind the playfulness is a serious operation. The team roasts at its own cupping lab and grades obsessively, putting out a range that runs from the delicate, fruit-forward single-origins specialty drinkers chase to deliberately darker roasts built for those who want body and depth. They've poured Cup of Excellence lots when they can get them, and more recently leaned into experimentation — including a coffee rested for a month in a whisky cask, a flourish that could only be Scottish.
The Broughton Street room itself is small, dark-wood and gloriously lived-in, the kind of place where the regulars and the baristas clearly know each other. Order an espresso or a pour-over, grab a bag of beans for home, and you're drinking from the source of the whole Edinburgh scene. First stop for anyone who wants to understand where Scottish specialty coffee came from.
