El Fant

El Fant sits in Torikorttelit, the small grid of historic blocks just behind Senate Square that's quietly become one of Helsinki's most considered food-and-drink quarters. The cafe occupies a corner on Katariinankatu and runs a deliberate split-personality programme: specialty coffee by day, natural wines by night.

The coffee side leads with a signature Tanzania Ilomba prepared on V60, served with tasting notes that lean into the warm berry profile the bean develops as it cools. The bar runs a small but focused espresso programme alongside, and retail bags are available for home brewing. The food line is short and well-edited — pastries, simple plates, a few sweets — designed to support the drinks rather than compete with them.

The space itself is one of the architectural standouts of Helsinki's specialty scene. Designed by the Yatofu studio, the room balances warm wood, soft lighting and a long bar in a way that works equally for a morning espresso, an afternoon pour-over, and a wine flight at dusk. A useful stop on any Torikorttelit walk, and easy to pair with a visit to the Old Market Hall a few minutes away.
