La Torrefazione

La Torrefazione is one of Helsinki's more ambitious specialty cafés — a downtown operation that took the third-wave approach and grafted it onto a wider, more food-led all-day model. The flagship sits at Aleksanterinkatu 50, in the city's main commercial street, with several sister locations spread across central Helsinki including Lasipalatsi and Kamppi.

The coffee programme is the spine. La Torrefazione roasts its own beans in collaboration with Kaffa Roastery, travelling to producing countries to buy directly from farmers when possible, and every barista on the bar takes a formal in-house barista exam before working a shift. The bar covers espresso, filter and a small handful of brew methods, with retail bags available alongside.

What separates La Torrefazione from a pure specialty bar is the all-day kitchen — breakfast, lunch, sandwiches and salads, plus a popular weekend brunch — which makes it a comfortable spot to settle into rather than just stop at. The Aleksanterinkatu room is large, bright and busy, with a steady commercial-district crowd. A useful anchor for an afternoon in central Helsinki.
