Machina Coffee — coffee roaster in Edinburgh

Coffee Roaster

Machina Coffee

4.5

Independent Marchmont roaster since 2013. Specialty beans, brewing equipment and subscriptions, precise espresso and filter.

Machina Coffee has been roasting independently in Edinburgh since 2013, building a quietly serious operation that wraps roasting, retail and equipment into a single specialty-minded whole. Many in the city first met it as Machina Espresso — a go-to for brewing kit and machines — but at its heart is a roastery, based out at Peffermill, turning out beans for wholesale, retail and subscription customers across the UK and beyond.

The public home of all this is the cafe on Marchmont Road, in one of Edinburgh's leafy, tenement-lined southern neighbourhoods. It's a calm, well-kept room with the brand's 'EST 2013 — Coffee Roasters' lettering across the window, the sort of neighbourhood spot that locals fold into their week. Espresso is poured with care, the filter rotates through Machina's own single-origins, and the bar doubles as a place to pick up beans and gear for home.

What sets Machina apart is how completely it covers the coffee journey — from the green bean it roasts to the grinder you'll use to brew it. For anyone setting up a home brewing routine in Edinburgh, it's both a teacher and a supplier, with a proper cafe attached. A roaster's roaster, in the best sense.
