Boxx Coffee Roasters
★ 4.6
Istanbul-origin roastery, strong espresso, traditional Turkish coffee, evening venue Thu–Sat.
Boxx Coffee Roasters started in Istanbul in 2015 and opened its first US cafe in the LA Arts District in 2021. The brand brought with it a coffee programme built on third-wave specialty principles — direct-trade sourcing, light-medium roast, pour-over focus — alongside a traditional Turkish coffee programme that most LA specialty bars don't even attempt.
The espresso bar is the entry point: a precise pull, paired with milk drinks that lean classical rather than experimental. The single-origin pour-over rotation runs alongside, with seasonal Africans and Centrals dominating. The Turkish coffee — brewed traditionally in a cezve, served with the grounds — is the cultural anchor and worth ordering at least once, especially if you're new to the style.
The space is calm and design-led, fitting in naturally with the Arts District's mix of galleries, warehouses, and converted lofts. It draws Arts District residents, downtown professionals, and the international specialty coffee crowd circulating through Verve, Stumptown, and Maru. Thursday through Saturday Boxx also stays open as an evening venue from 6pm — a rare specialty-cafe-by-day, hospitality-venue-by-night model in LA.
For anyone wanting a specialty experience that doesn't look or taste like every other third-wave bar in LA, Boxx is the obvious choice.
