Coffee Department

Balat house-roastery leading with V60 single origins and a retail bean shelf.

Coffee Department has been roasting in Balat since 2013, long enough to count as an institution in a scene this young. Set among the painted houses and antique shops of the Golden Horn quarter, it helped prove that serious specialty could live outside the Beyoğlu cluster.

The coffee is house-roasted and filter-forward. Pour-over and V60 lead the menu, batch brew keeps the queue moving, and single origins come with the kind of origin notes that reward a slow read. There's a retail shelf of beans and gear for anyone who wants to take the craft home, plus a tidy espresso programme for the milk-drink crowd.

The room is small and unfussy, the kind of place regulars treat as a second living room while travellers drift in off the Balat photo trail. Order a filter, grab a window seat, and watch one of Istanbul's prettiest neighbourhoods go by.
