Fuglen Tomigaya

4.3

Nordic light-roast pioneer. Norwegian roaster's original Tokyo branch since 2012. Specialty coffee by day, cocktail bar by night.

Fuglen opened its Tomigaya branch in 2012 — a Norwegian coffee bar from Oslo, dropped into a quiet residential pocket of Shibuya, and, almost accidentally, one of the foundational venues of Tokyo's third-wave specialty scene. Before Fuglen, Tokyo's specialty options were thin. After Fuglen, the city had a benchmark.

The coffee programme runs Nordic light roasts — bright, transparent profiles that initially surprised local drinkers used to darker Japanese roasting traditions. Pour-over and AeroPress are the focus, with espresso pulled on a La Marzocco; the bean menu rotates seasonal single origins from Africa and Latin America, sourced through Fuglen's Oslo operation.

The space is a small two-story café styled with vintage 1950s and 60s Norwegian furniture — much of it for sale alongside the coffee. By day, it's a quiet specialty café; by night, the same room shifts into a cocktail bar pouring craft drinks built around coffee, vermouth, and aquavit.

There are now several Fuglen sites in Tokyo (Asakusa, Hanegi Koen, Sangubashi), but Tomigaya remains the original and the most personal. A near-mandatory pilgrimage stop in Tokyo specialty coffee history.
