Intelligentsia Coffee

Intelligentsia opened the doors of its Silverlake bar at Sunset Junction in 2007 — a moment most LA coffee people now treat as the year the city's third-wave scene actually began. Chicago-born but California-committed, the brand brought direct-trade sourcing, light-medium roasts, and barista craft to a market that had been dominated by drive-thru chains.

The coffee programme runs deep. Black Cat is their flagship espresso — chocolatey, balanced, the house benchmark for the Oat Flat White that most LA baristas now consider canon. The rotating single-origins lean Ethiopian, Guatemalan and Colombian, with seasonal micro-lots that change with the harvest. Pour-over is offered to order. Batch brew runs continuously.

The space is minimalist-industrial: polished concrete, exposed brick, low lighting, the long bar as the focal point. It draws a mix of locals on laptops, weekend regulars, and out-of-town coffee pilgrims doing the Silverlake circuit. There's no rush, no upsell — the bar runs at the pace of the brew.

Worth visiting as much for the history as the cup. Without this opening, none of what followed in LA specialty would look the same.
