Kontra Coffee: Pioneering Excellence, Ethical Roasting
Kontra Coffee embodies a rich legacy in specialty coffee, co-founded by Martin Hildebrandt, the 2001 World Barista Champion, and later employing Troels Poulsen, the 2005 champion. This championship pedigree stems from their roots at Café Europa, a crucible for barista excellence. Co-founder Kurt Dalsgaard also pioneered specialty coffee in Copenhagen with Amokka in 1998, making Kontra a true forerunner in the city's vibrant scene.
Their commitment to quality and transparency was further solidified by being early adopters of direct trade relationships with producers, starting in 2011.Beyond their championship heritage, Kontra Coffee possesses a unique soul, deeply committed to ethical sourcing and innovation.
They are the exclusive Danish ambassador for the "Orang Utan Coffee" project, directly supporting Sumatran farmers in sustainable, organic cultivation that protects critically endangered orangutan habitats. A premium of 50 cents per kilogram directly benefits farmers and the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme.
Their dedication to precision is evident in their modern Loring L70 roaster, ensuring consistent, high-quality roasts. Kontra also partners with CoffeeMind for scientifically-based coffee education, extending their expertise and expanding their brand internationally.
