Kumquat is the kind of cafe that makes you rethink what an espresso bar can be. Tucked into a minimal Highland Park storefront on York Boulevard, it has quietly become one of the most exciting modern specialty operations in LA — the kind of place LA Magazine puts on the top of every Highland Park guide.

The coffee programme is technical without being precious. A small, rotating selection of single-origin pour-overs, espresso pulled at competition standards, and milk drinks built on seasonal syrups and ingredient experiments. The iced sesame latte is the signature most regulars order — savoury, nutty, balanced by the espresso underneath. The team rotates new seasonal drinks every few weeks; the menu is a quiet form of brewing R&D.

The space is small and bright: minimal furniture, big windows, friendly counter staff who don't rush you and don't lecture. It draws Highland Park locals, NELA creatives, and the East Side coffee crowd doing the York Boulevard circuit (Kumquat usually paired with À Bloc a few blocks east).
