Step into Truth Coffee Roasting and be transported to a fully realized steampunk fantasy, where the romantic, steam-powered technology of coffee roasters comes alive. At its heart stands "Colossus," a vintage 1940s cast-iron roaster, meticulously rebuilt by founder David Donde, a pioneer credited with introducing specialty coffee roasting to Cape Town and co-founding SCASA.
This immersive world is home to the almost mythical Racemosa, a rediscovered coffee species so rare that in 2024, only 14 kilograms were harvested globally, with Truth securing a mere five. For such precious beans, master roasters employ stethoscopes to precisely pinpoint the "first crack," a testament to their delicate craft.Beyond the extraordinary Racemosa, Truth offers a unique "Black Honey" processed espresso, a vibrant blend of Ethiopian and El Salvadorian beans, showcasing their commitment to innovative flavors.
Their ethical sourcing ensures farmers receive premium prices, well above Fair Trade standards. The experience is further enriched by newspaper-style menus, featuring headlines about their homemade bread, and baristas in eccentric steampunk uniforms complete with leather waistcoats and goggles. Founder David Donde's flair for unique hospitality extends to "The Art of Duplicity," a secret speakeasy, cementing Truth Coffee's reputation as a truly distinctive destination in the specialty coffee world.
