Nord Coast Coffee Roastery sits on Deichstraße in the Altstadt, where a window table looks straight onto the Nikolaifleet canal a corner away from the Elbphilharmonie. Co-founders Paula — who grew up with the smell of roasting coffee on her grandparents' Brazilian farm — and Jörn met in a Speicherstadt roastery before opening their own. Beans from around the world are roasted on site across the light-to-dark spectrum and brewed every serious way: V60, Chemex, AeroPress, syphon, and the rare Karlsbader Kanne, a German method Paula has won championships with for the clean, untainted cup it produces. The room spreads over two storeys of vintage reading-room comfort, and yes, the all-day breakfasts — banana-bread waffles, beetroot-lox toast — are genuinely good. But the coffee craft is what earns it a place here. Across three Hamburg cafés, the Deichstraße original is the one to plan around; arrive off-peak to beat the weekend queues.
