The Folks

4.6

Decade-old one-man roastery with in-house roasting, Guatemala focus, and a Kees van der Westen Slim Jim Idrocompresso lever machine.

Tucked into a quiet corner of central Taipei's Da'an neighbourhood, The Folks is easy to miss at first — and a spot you'll find yourself visiting again and again. The cafe has been running for over a decade as a one-man operation, and that single-operator focus is exactly what produces the cup's consistency.

Beans are roasted on-site, often with a focus on Guatemala. Owner Tzu-Chi has dialled in espresso-based drinks built around balance and clarity rather than novelty. At the centre of the room sits a Slim Jim Idrocompresso by Kees van der Westen — a rare hand-pulled lever espresso machine that defines the rhythm of every drink. The pace is steady, not rushed; the bar seating feels more like a chef's counter than a typical cafe.

There are six seats at the counter inside, plus benches outside. The Folks runs morning hours only — 8am to 1pm, closed Thursdays. Stop in quickly for a coffee to go (at a slightly reduced price) or settle in with a book before the doors close at lunchtime. The con panna — a single espresso with honey, a dash of milk, and a top of cream and cacao — is the standout signature, just sweet enough without overpowering the coffee itself. A purist's destination in Da'an.
