Specialty Coffee Bali
Bali's specialty coffee scene runs the length of the island — from Ubud's pioneering roastery to the Canggu coast and the Bukit. Our guide maps the best.
Bali's Specialty Coffee: From Ubud's Roasteries to the Canggu Coast
Bali's specialty coffee scene is unusual among the world's coffee cities: the island grows its own. In the volcanic highlands around Kintamani, smallholders produce the washed and natural Arabica that fills the hoppers of roasteries down on the coast — so a flat white in Canggu can be a genuinely local cup, farm to bar within the same island. Add a decade of Australian and expat café culture and you get a scene that's equal parts surf town and serious craft, spread across five distinct pockets rather than one downtown.
It started in the rice-field calm of Ubud. Seniman Coffee Studio opened in 2010 as the island's original specialty roastery — a coffee-and-design studio with its own micro-roastery, cold-drip lab and brewing workshops that trained a generation of Balinese baristas. Around it, Ubud Coffee Roastery turns out fresh Kintamani roasts for the town's filter drinkers. The energy then shifts south to the surf-and-laptop sprawl of Canggu and Berawa, the island's densest coffee cluster: Hungry Bird roasting single origins on-site, Blacklist Coffee Roasters running immersive tastings, the SCA-accredited brew bar at House of Yoreh, and Satu-Satu Coffee Company championing traditionally produced Balinese beans.
West in Seminyak and Petitenget, the craft gets polished: Expat Roasters sourcing farmer-direct and running its own academy, the iconic moody espresso bar at Revolver Espresso, plus house-roasting at Coffee Cartel and The Koop. The scene even reaches the island's quieter edges — Simply Brew Coffee Roasters roasting in beachside Sanur, the micro-lot obsessives at Missibu Roaster, and small-batch espresso at Suka Espresso near the Uluwatu cliffs. Rent a scooter, pick a region, and start tasting your way across the island.
