Specialty Coffee Vienna
Vienna's specialty coffee scene is one of Europe's most layered — third-wave roasters and brew bars sitting beside centuries-old Kaffeehäuser.
Vienna's Specialty Coffee Scene
Vienna's specialty coffee scene is one of Europe's most layered. In a city famous for its centuries-old Kaffeehäuser, a parallel third-wave culture has quietly grown into something serious. The shift started around 2010, when pioneers like CaffèCouture and Kaffemik began roasting their own beans and obsessing over single origins. A decade later, the scene has depth: in-house roasteries on nearly every other corner of Neubau, world-stage baristas in POC (Robert Gruber took an Austrian Brewers Cup title and a top-six World Brewers Cup placement), and direct-trade sourcing programs that bring beans from farms in Ethiopia, Nicaragua and beyond.
The geography helps. Neubau — the 7th district — is the densest cluster: Jonas Reindl, Kaffemik, Wolfgang Coffee, Coffee Comet and Süssmund all sit within a few blocks. Leopoldstadt across the Danube canal has its own crew (Vogel Kaffee, Balthasar, The Good Coffee Society). And the Innere Stadt has CaffèCouture for visitors who don't want to stray far from St. Stephen's.
Our guide covers the 15 spots that genuinely represent Vienna's specialty coffee scene. Pick one and start exploring.
