Specialty Coffee Vienna
Vienna's specialty coffee scene is one of Europe's most layered — third-wave roasters and brew bars sitting beside centuries-old Kaffeehäuser.
Vienna's Specialty Coffee: The Third Wave Beside the Kaffeehaus
Vienna's specialty coffee scene works in a city that already invented coffeehouse culture. The grand 19th-century Kaffeehäuser still anchor every neighbourhood — marble tables, Thonet chairs, melange and Apfelstrudel — but a quieter third wave runs alongside: minimalist espresso bars in old shopfronts, light-roast filter bars in courtyard buildings, baristas who treat extraction the way the city treats music — with precision and patience.
The shift started around 2010, when CaffèCouture and Kaffemik began roasting their own beans and obsessing over single origins. A decade later the scene has depth: Neubau is the densest cluster, with Jonas Reindl, Wolfgang Coffee, Coffee Comet and Süssmund all within a few blocks. Leopoldstadt across the canal holds its own crew — Vogel Kaffee, Balthasar, The Good Coffee Society — and Alsergrund's POC gave the city its first world-stage barista in Robert Gruber (Austrian Brewers Cup champion, top-six WBrC).
What's distinctive about Vienna is the parallelism. The Kaffeehaus tradition didn't fold — it sits a block from the third-wave bar, and both feel essential. Direct-trade beans from Ethiopia and Nicaragua, light Nordic roasts, oat milk by default, but also the unhurried sit-down rhythm the city has always rewarded. Our guide covers the third-wave half.
